‘Explore America’s abandoned towns, where decaying buildings and empty roads hold traces of the past.
These ghost towns reflect the rise and fall of industries and the lives once lived there. From the 19th to the 20th century, these ghost towns invite you to travel back in time and explore the leftovers of the past.’

This project explores abandoned ghost towns through multiple media, including video, a mini zine, and an interactive website. The work combines visual, tactile, and digital elements to convey the atmosphere, stories, and fading traces of these places, inviting viewers to engage with them both physically and virtually.

• Guide Book

The book’s tilted shape mimics the slanted structures found in ghost towns, while the use of screw post binding and stained wood strips references the worn materials of abandoned homes. Each section includes a town’s origin story, key events, local legends, landmarks, and archival photographs.

• Video

I created a video using ambient sound and footage of the towns to convey their atmosphere.  It functions as both a visual essay and an emotional entry point, drawing viewers into the stillness and the imagined traces of past residents.

Interactive Website

The project concludes with an interactive website designed as a digital ghost town. It starts by inviting users with the video, and navigation buttons, subtle animation, and a flashlight-style cursor allow users to explore the content.

• Zine

The mini zine functions as a brief guide for viewers. Printed on vellum, it reflects the fading nature and eeriness of abandoned places and supports the project’s theme. Within the website, the mini zine is integrated as an interactive element. When users hover over it, the zine pops up as ‘READ ME’. This interaction replicates the tactile experience of the physical zine and adds an engaging layer to the website.
